چکیده

Unwanted gas bubbles are a practical problem limiting the reliable use of microfluidic systems, particularly for the culture of biological samples. We present a robust, scalable, single-layer strategy for the elimination of gas bubbles from microchannel networks that are defined in gas-permeable substrate materials. Removal rates for nitrogen bubbles were measured in water and ethanol, and compared with numerical predictions. Gas bubbles were removed at rates exceeding 0.14 μL/min in a single trap with a maximal volume of 0.43 μL. Scalability of the design was demonstrated in a parallel configuration of eight traps. The gas removal strategy was applied to the perfusion culture of small blood vessels.

Bubbles no more: in-plane trapping and removal of bubbles in microfluidic devices.

Gas bubbles present a frequent challenge to the on-chip investigation and culture of biological cells and small organs. The presence of a single bubble can adversely impair biological function and often viability as it increases the wall shear stress in a liquid-perfused microchannel by at least one order of magnitude. We present a microfluidic strategy for in-plane trapping and removal of gas ...

Evaluation of stability and size distribution of sunflower oil-coated micro bubbles for localized drug delivery

BACKGROUND Micro bubbles were initially introduced as contrast agents for ultrasound examinations as they are able to modify the signal-to-noise ratio in imaging, thus improving the assessment of clinical information on human tissue. Recent developments have demonstrated the feasibility of using these bubbles as drug carriers in localized delivery. In micro fluidics devices for generation of mi...

Hydrodynamic investigation of multiple rising bubbles using lattice Boltzmann method

Hydrodynamics of multiple rising bubbles as a fundamental two-phase phenomenon is studied numerically by lattice Boltzmann method and using Lee two-phase model. Lee model based on Cahn-Hilliard diffuse interface approach uses potential form of intermolecular forces and isotropic finite difference discretization. This approach is able to avoid parasitic currents and leads to a stable procedure t...

Radial response of individual bubbles subjected to shock wave lithotripsy pulses in vitro

Direct measurements of individual bubble oscillations in lithotripsy fields have been performed using light-scattering techniques. Studies were performed with bubble clouds in gassy water as well as single levitated bubbles in degassed water. There is direct evidence that the bubble survives the inertial collapse, rebounding several times before breaking up. Bubble dynamics calculations agree w...

A method for detecting bubbles in two-phase gas-liquid flow

Detecting bubble in two-phase flow has been a basic issue in two-phase flow systems. A new method for measuring the frequency of bubble formation is presented in this paper. For this purpose, an electronic device was designed and constructed which works based on a change in intensity of laser beam. For this purpose, continues light beam is embedded just above the needle, which is received by a ...
